Dahi Chura: The quick Bihari breakfast recipe

Dahi Chura is a traditional Bihari dish made with flattened rice (chura) and yogurt (dahi). It is typically served during festivals and special occasions. In most of Bihari’s homes and some parts of Uttar Pradesh, people eat Dahi Chura on Makar Sankranti festival. In my home we also eat Dahi Chura on Makar Sankranti. It is In Hindu culture to eat it on Makar Sankranti.

Here’s how you can make Dahi Chura at home:

Ingredients

1 cup flattened rice (chura)

1 cup thick yogurt (dahi)

sugar or jaggery (according to taste)

Directions

Step 1

Place the flattened rice in a sieve or colander.

Rinse it thoroughly under cold running water until the water runs clear.

Step 2

Let it sit for about 10 minutes to allow excess water to drain out.

Step 3

Transfer the washed flattened rice to a mixing bowl. Add the thick yogurt and sugar/jaggery to the flattened rice and Mix everything well to ensure the sweetener is evenly distributed.

Let it soak for about 5 minutes. The flattened rice will absorb the yogurt and become soft and creamy.

Dahi Chura can be served immediately as a breakfast dish or a dessert.

Note:

  • You can garnish the Dahi Chura with chopped nuts of your choice (almonds, cashews, pistachios).
  • You can also add fresh fruits like sliced bananas, apples, or berries for a refreshing taste and vibrant appearance.
  • Remember, you can adjust the sweetness and the choice of nuts and fruits according to your preference. Dahi Chura is a versatile dish, and you can get creative with the toppings to suit your taste.
